For fans across the world, the #FreeBabylon5 campaign ran from 2013 to 2024

Project Overview

Babylon 5 was a much loved 90’s TV show which suffered from a lack of interest from the studio to develop a reboot or spin-off. The #FreeBabylon5 campaign aimed to keep the spirit of the show alive by providing free resources and fan content.

Client Challenges

Many of the original content associated with the crew were copyrighted and not available for reuse. Thankfully the fans made an agreement to use copyrighted content in the campaign. Additionally, we had to provide content that was both engaging and informative that would keep fans interested and encourage them to engage with the campaign.

Our Solution

  • Visual Identity: We developed a design that would reflect the aesthetic of the show yet create something unique to the campaign.
  • Immersive Experience: The site functioned mainly as a blog with content added by fans most weeks. This meant we had to support non tech savvy contributors while maintaining a high level of quality.
  • Information Architecture: We created an optimized conversion funnel that guides users from technical curiosity to campaign engagement.

  • Mobile Optimization: We optimised the site for mobile devices to ensure a seamless experience across all screen sizes.
  • Headless CMS: We utilised Webiny, a headless CMS that allowed the team to publish new content without relying on developers.
  • Core Web Vitals Optimization: The site had to be optimised for Core Web Vitals to ensure fast load times and a good user experience.
  • On-Page SEO: We optimised the site for search engines to improve visibility and drive organic traffic.

Results & Impact

  • Conversion: The campaign ran successfully for a number of years and was talked about extensively by the fans and show creators.
  • Fan Engagement: At its peak, the campaign had a high level of engagement with fans actively participating in the discussion and campaigning for the cause.
